This is much better than the colored versions. I would stay away from black. Make those dark areas dark grey and not black. I would also scratch the idea of chopping the posters or doing something withe the posters. It's still not working.
Please set your copy like a normal poster and just center align your copy but set it 2/3 up the center. Also add the following element to your design. I'm attaching 2 different textures. Can you kindly apply them as part of your background. Keep your ornate background and place these textured background on top. Convert them to greyscale in photoshop so that they will add depth and texture to your background.
Also, see what you can do with the addition of blood splatter. Not too much, but just a touch here and there.
On text, can you make sure the size of the first letter and the corresponding copy not too big. If the font size of the first letter is 20, make the rest 15-16. The size different right now looks akward.
I also like what you did with the text by adding a texture and adding a drop shadow to make them pop. Good job on solving this.
